NEIGHBORHOOD ALERT! A series of burglaries has occurred in April. Most recently 2 homes in the 1600 block of Nantucket were broken into in the same time period on April 23, 2007. During the time between 11:15am and 1:30 pm, the burglar entered a gated area, threw an object into a large window and entered one home. Police say it appeared to be a professional job and they were in and out in just a few minutes. The person/s were very thorough, ransacking the house and taking guns and jewelry. The second home was burgled in the same manner. Both homes had dogs, one escaped but was later found by another neighbor. A third home might have been a target but the homeowner answered thed doorbell. A young, Hispanic man, well-dressed in starched khakis and shirt told the homeowner that he was a neighbor and had seen his Calico cat climb over the fence into her atrium. He wanted to come in and retrieve his cat. The homeowner replied that she knew her neighbors and he wasn't one of them. However, she did close the door, looked in the atrium but when she returned, the man had disappeared. This happened during the same time frame as the burglaries. A neighbor reported that elderly friends living in a townhome at San Felipe and Chimney Rock was also burgled on the same day about the same time. The homeowners had just gone out for a short time. Another attempted burglery occurred early April in the 1400 block of Nantucket. An observant neighbor frightened the intruder and called the police. Please be dilligent in watching for strangers in the neighborhood, especially those paying unusual attention to homes, layout, etc. Also, don't forget to activate alarm systems even when only out for short periods. Don't hesitate to call police to report any suspicious activity. Better to risk embarassment that to remain silent and allow a possible burglary. It is devestating to the victims in more ways than just the loss of material items. The blessing would be for the criminals to be caught and sent to jail. Anyone knowing of other instances of criminal activity in the neighborhood, please email me (penny@penrichprop.com) so we can warn others. If you know of an event, such as a city picnic, local high school graduation or a wedding, post it here to let all of us know! Be sure to keep yourself informed by checking this page frequently! |

This particular crime occurred in the Tanglewood Subdivision.
On Wednesday morning at 2:46 a.m., an unknown suspect kicked in the door to a residence in the 5200 block of Huckleberry. The suspect entered the house, took a computer, and quickly vacated the scene. The resident's perimeter alarm had been set and was activated when entry was made. The alarm likely scared off the intruder. The resident was home but did not see anyone or any vehicles that may have been involved. At this time there is no forensic evidence, suspect description, or vehicle description for this incident.
Please don't forget to set your alarm when leaving your residence for any reason. If you see anything suspicious in Briargrove, please contact the Briargrove Officer at 713-822-0600.

Westhaven Estates Jan 26, 2010 Security Meeting Notes
The following is an account of a recent attack on neighbors in Westhaven Estates mid November 2009. It is copied from a recent email I received from a neighbor. Westhaven Estates is a great neighborhood to live in but everyone needs to pay attention to what’s happening around them and to be more diligent about locking doors and setting alarms. It’s a sign of the times and is happening all over Houston. Please take care and keep reports flowing this way so I can post them to our neighborhood website to keep everyone aware.
Hi, everyone. I'm sending this to everyone I can think of that lives in the general vicinity of Briargrove, Westhaven, Tanglewood, close-in Memorial, etc., and are on my email list. Please pass this on to anyone else you can think of, especially if you have family, children, parents, friends, etc. in the area.
Last night (Sun.), we returned home from dinner at about 9:00. There were numerous police cars parked directly across the street from us, and in front of a home where two, elderly people live. Some of the details are unclear, but the elderly couple's home was invaded by two black men, robbed and the woman was badly beaten. From what I hear now (I just talked to another neighbor) , the woman had to be taken to the hospital later that evening, but is doing better now.
Forrest talked to the police, but even they seemed to be unsure if the men were in a car, or on foot, when they left the house. They're also not sure if the couple was followed home from somewhere earlier in the evening, and the two men hid until they found the appropriate time to assault them. The elderly man did take his trashcan to the curb after dark, and they think that possibly, the men got into his garage then, or followed him back up his driveway and thus, gained entrance into the house at that point. They may never really know for sure how it all took place, but the police said the crime in this area has skyrocketed over the last year and a half. Part of the issue they said, is the bus stop that's at the corner of Woodway and Potomac. It's easy access to this part of town, and an even easier exit, as the bus schedule runs constantly and often.
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a 'group' (maybe 5-6?) of young(er)men waiting for the bus, and I am most certain, they were probably not yardcrew related, nor employees of Houston Country Club. I have also seen recently, a couple of young men riding their bicycles around the neighborhood, and they too, do not look like they live in the area, nor have I ever seen them doing so before. After mentioning this, the police encouraged anyone who feels suspicious about such persons, to call. They said they've received numerous calls about such (people) lately, and especially, about this particular bus stop.
In short, I SHOULD HAVE BEEN one of those that called, but didn't. It's just easy to blow this sort of thing off, and think you're overreacting.... I will now, though......... Awareness is crucial!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for taking time to read this. Hope it helps all of us.

On Wednesday, October 27th, between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., unknown suspects burglarized a non-resident's vehicle in the 2100 block of Briarmead.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., the complainant parked her Volvo SUV on the street in the 2100 block of Briarmead and walked into the Briargrove resident's home. The complainant returned to her vehicle at approximately 5:00 p.m., to find that unknown suspects had broken the front passenger side window, reached in and taken a bag from the front passenger side floorboard. The bag contained the complainant's purse and a laptop computer.
The Briargrove Officer observed numerous people walking and jogging in the area, as well as heavy vehicle traffic. No one reported seeing a suspicious vehicle, nor a suspicious person in the area of the BMV. If anyone observed anything out of the ordinary in the subdivision during this time, please call the Briargrove Officer at 713-822-0600. We are not sure how the suspects knew the bag was on the floorboard of the Volvo. Anytime you are out in the neighborhood, please be alert and observant of any suspicious activity.
I want to remind everyone again to remove anything of value when exiting your car. The closer it gets to Christmas time, the chances of an increase in BMV's are more likely. Lets cut down the opportunities for these offenders. - NEWS RELEASE: AGGRAVATED ASSAULT OF HPD OFFICER AT 1100 AUGUSTAPosted on: 2010-04-05
Houston police are investigating the aggravated assault of a Houston police officer by an armed suspect in the 1100 block of Augusta Drive about 11:20 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 23).

Senior Police Officer C. O. Mickens Jr., who was not injured in this incident, is assigned to the Special Operations Division. He was sworn in as an officer in February 1993.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Dillingham and Senior Police Officer J. Bonaby III reported:
Officer Mickens was working an approved extra job at an apartment complex at 1100 Augusta when he was approached by an unknown male suspect who, while holding a gun, tried to get in the officer's vehicle while the officer was inside. As Officer Mickens yelled out, the suspect fled on foot, westbound in the 5800 block of Sugar Hill Street. As Officer Mickens got out of his vehicle, the suspect turned towards him, pointed the gun and fired once.
